Minnesota BPPV / Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo / Ear Crystals Attorney
The utricle, or pouch in the inner ear, contains hundreds of tiny “ear crystals” (crystal particles) composed of calcium carbonate. These “ear crystals”, scientifically known as otoconia, act as the body’s own GPS system because it stimulates nerve cell transmissions to the brain when you move your head. When these ear crystals get dislodged by a serious head injury, vertigo can occur.
When you are involved in a serious motor vehicle accident and sustain head trauma, benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) can occur. When this happens, those ear crystals shake loose upon impact and fall out of the utricle. The crystals then float into the semicircular canals of the inner ear and confuse the brain. When the crystals move around in the canal, the brain thinks the head is moving more than it actually is, which causes vertigo.
While some describe BPPV as a temporary, annoying condition, others will classify it as debilitating because it makes it difficult to sleep, walk, stand or even drive around.
Symptoms of BPPV include dizziness, lightheadedness, imbalance, blurred vision, vertigo, nausea and sensitivity to light. These symptoms can change, depending on the position of the head. Each episode of BPPV last anywhere from 30-120 seconds and the frequency of each episode can vary depending on:
- the number of displaced ear crystals
- repositioning of the ear crystals
- whether the ear crystals dissolve on their own
- if the ear crystals have moved to another ear canal
- sensitivities to the displaced ear crystals in the individual
Treatment for BPPV can vary. While some people choose to wait it out in the hopes that the crystals will reposition or dissolve, others will take anti-vertigo medication. A canalith repositioning procedure can be another option which can be performed by a professional or at home.
