Minnesota Anisocoria Attorney
Extreme force of an airbag explosion can cause three main types of injury:
- Anisocoria – variance in pupil sizes
- Concussion – a form of brain damage
- Tinnitus – ringing in the ears
What is Anisocoria?
Anisocoria is when blunt trauma to the head or eye area tears the pupil sphincter causing a permanent dilated pupil. Now that airbags are standard features in motor vehicles, anisocoria has become more prevalent.
Anisocoria can initially present as retina damage or sudden vision loss, however the vision will usually return completely within 4-6 weeks so that the victim is left with the disfigured dilated pupil.
Diagnosing Anisocoria
A neurological exam is performed after any blunt force head trauma associated with airbag deployment. The exam includes assessing the corneal reflex and manual palpation of the eyeball. A CT scan can also be performed to diagnose the degree of the injury.
If a patient does not show any signs of spinal or brain injury but has a Glasgow Coma score of 13-15, then an MRI is performed because it can show more damage than originally diagnosed and it can pick up a possible spinal cord compression or contusion that would require surgery.
