Minnesota Soft Tissue Injury Attorney
When you sustain damage to ligaments, muscles and tendons, a soft tissue injury occurs. Many soft tissue injuries are a result of a single blow, jerk, or twist in a motor vehicle accident or workplace related injury.
Types of Soft Tissue Injuries
Four types of soft tissue injuries are:
- Sprain – a stretch or tear of a ligament is a sprain. The ligaments are the strong bands of tissue that connect bones to bones. Shoulders, wrists, ankles and knees most often sustain ligament damage in accidents, in addition to the lumbar region of the spine.
- Strain – an injury to a muscle or tendon is a strain. Muscles are connected to bones by tendons. The knees, ankles and back make up most of the tendon / muscle strains in car accidents or work accidents.
- Contusion – a deep bruise where blood pools around an injury is called a contusion. When left untreated, contusions can cause permanent damage to the ligaments, tendons and muscles.
- Subluxation – a misaligned vertebrae is a subluxation. It puts pressure on nerves and disrupts the signals to and from the brain, interfering with the blood supply. This allows for deterioration of the surrounding ligaments, tendons and muscles.
Localized tissue hypoxia (lack of oxygen) and acidosis (increased hydrogen) can be produced by a soft tissue injury. Prior to surgery, the integrity of the soft tissue needs to be determined. If an incision through compromised soft tissue is made, it can lead to wound breakdown and deep infection.
Treating Soft Tissue Injuries
Treatment for soft tissue injuries include rest, ice compression and elevation (R.I.C.E.). Splints, braces or tape can also be used to protect the injured tissue.
